1) Remove Orphaned Software Applications from Add/Remove Programs

Sometimes, even after you have uninstalled a program, it remains as an option in the 'add or remove programs' control panel applications.

To delete orphaned program entries open Regedit and navigate to:
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall'

Look for the offending program entries and delete them.

2) Troubleshooting Shutdown Issues

Open Device manager (right click on 'my computer' and select 'manage' then 'device manager.'). Go to the 'view' menu and select 'show hidden devices.' Look for the 'APM/NT Legacy Node' entry. If it is disabled, enable it and try to shutdown your PC again.

If this did not help, go to'start\control panel\power options' If you have an 'APM' tab, make sure the option 'enable advanced power management support' is checked.

3) Alter Your Windows User Name

To change your registered user name open Regedit and navigate to:
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\'

Double click the 'RegisteredOwner' value and change it as desired. You can also change the company name by editing the 'RegisteredOrganization' value.

4) How to Check if There is a DVD Decoder Installed in the PC

If you want to check if you have DVD decoding software installed, or what decoder you actually have, this quick tip can help.

Open the command prompt ('start\run' then type 'cmd') and type 'dvdupgrd /detect'. This will pop up a window on the desktop with information on your decoding software or lack of same.

5) Use the System Restore Utility From 'Safe Mode Command Prompt.'

It's possible to start the system restore utility from the 'safe mode command prompt' boot option of Windows XP. This gives you one more option for rescuing your system, since this safe mode may load where other Windows XP boot options do not.

To invoke the system restore utility from the safe mode command prompt, type 'c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe.

1) Stop 'focus stealing' by background applications and pop-ups

If you get annoyed when pop-up windows or other applications you have running replace the window you are currently working on, here's a registry edit that can help you deal with this behaviour.

Start Regedit and navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop.'

Double click the 'ForegroundLockTimeout' key. Change the notation to decimal. This key controls the amount of time that Windows will wait for user input in the currently active window before shifting focus to whatever other window is demanding attention. The default is 200000 milliseconds decimal, or 200 seconds. Change this to a greater millisecond value if you want to prevent Windows XP from stealing the focus while you are occupied.

2) Add the Admin Tools to the Start Menu

To do this right click on the start button and select 'properties.' Click the 'customize' button next to the 'start menu' option. Choose the 'advanced' tab. In the 'start menu items' box, scroll down until you find the 'administrative tools' entry. Change the option to 'display on the all programs menu and the start menu.'

3) Closing Multiple Taskbar Items at Once

Simply hold down the CTRL key and click on each taskbar item you want closed. They will all become selected, and you can right click on any one of them and choose 'close group' to close all selected windows.

4) Using 'Groups' in Windows Explorer

To use groups in Windows Explorer navigate to the folder you wish to group and go to 'view\arrange icons by\' then select the 'show in groups' option. Now, whenever you choose an 'arrange icons by' option such as name, date modified or size, Explorer will group them in categories depending on each file's properties.
This is especially handy when searching for files of a specific type.

5) Disable the Annoying 'Click' Sound in Internet Explorer.

Go to 'start\control panel\sounds and audio devices' and choose the 'sounds' tab.

Now in the 'program events' windows, scroll down to the 'windows explorer' section and highlight 'start navigation.' Now change the 'sounds' dropdown box at the bottom of the window to '(none).' This will rid you of the infernal click.

6) Rollback Device Drivers in Case of Error

To roll back a device driver to a previous version right click on 'my computer' and select 'manage.' Open 'device manager' and highlight and double click the device whose drivers you wish to roll back. Go to the 'driver' tab and select 'roll back driver.' Your system will revert to the most recent saved driver after a restart.

7) Avoid Having to Re-Activate Windows XP After Reinstallation

Normally, when you reinstall Windows XP you need to also reactivate the operating system by phone or Internet in order to use it. This can be avoided by simply copying a single file from your old installation to your new one.

The 'wpa.dbl' file, located in the 'c:\windows\system32\' folder, indicated to the operating system whether the current hardware configuration has been activated or not. As long as you have not changed any of the hardware in your PC during the reinstall, you can simply copy the file onto a floppy or CD and copy it back into Windows after the reinstall to avoid the re-activation procedure.

8) Mouse Problem? Use MouseKeys

Windows XP includes the 'mousekeys' application in with its suite of accessibility applications. This small program enables the number pad keys to control the mouse pointer, making your life much, much easier.

To activate MouseKeys, hit CTRL + left SHIFT + NUM LOCK

9) Place Your Internet Favourites on Your Start Menu

Here's a quick tip which saves you a step or two in opening your web browser to commonly used web sites.Right click on the start button and choose 'properties,' then hit the 'customize' button. Choose the 'advanced' tab and scroll down the 'start menu items' box until you reach the 'favourites menu' option. Check it to add your IE favourites list to the start menu as a new tree.

10) Disabling Startup Password

If you are the only user of your system and you are tired of entering the username and password each time you login, you can disable this requirement.

To do this go to 'start\run' and type 'control userpasswords2'.

Uncheck the 'user must enter a user name and password to use this computer' checkbox.

1) Remove the Frequently Used Programs List From the Start Menu

Use this trick to wipe out the frequently used programs section of the start menu altogether.

To do this open Regedit:
Navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer'.

Create a new DWORD value called 'NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList' and give it the value '1'.

2) Stop Automatic Grouping of Taskbar Programs

Right click on an empty area of the taskbar or start button and click 'properties.' Choose the 'taskbar' tab and uncheck the 'group similar taskbar buttons' option.

3) Close Multiple Desktop Windows Fast

Simply hold down the SHIFT key as you click on the X button to close the most recent of the windows. This will close all the windows related to the one you clicked on.

4) Add Some Useful Commands to the Right-Click Menu

This registry edit will enable you to add the 'move to folder' and 'copy to folder' commands to your right click menu.

To do this open Regedit and navigate to:
'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFileSystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers'

Create two new keys, 'Copy To' and 'Move To'
Set the value of 'Copy To' to '{C2FBB630-2971-11d1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}'
Set the value of 'Move To' to '{C2FBB631-2971-11d1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}'
Close Regedit, you now have the 'copy to folder' and 'move to folder' options in your right-click menu.

5) Reduce Menu Delay to Speed up the Windows Desktop

To do this open Regedit and Navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\'

Double click the 'MenuShowDelay' value. The default value is 400, with lower values reducing the menu delay time. Experiment to see what suits you best. Note that setting this to zero is not a good idea, as it will activate every menu as your pointer passes over it, which will become really annoying, fast.

6) Show Control Panel as a Menu

To do this Right click on the 'start' button and choose 'properties.' Select the 'customize' button to the right of the 'start menu' option. Choose the 'advanced' tab and then in the 'start menu items' box, find 'control panel' and select the 'display as menu' option.

7) Change the Default Installation Directory

To do this open Regedit and Navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Windows\CurrentVersion\'

Double click the 'ProgramFilesDir' value. Change the value to the directory you wish to be the default installation location for your software.

8) Make Your Mouse More Responsive

Go to 'start\control panel\printers and other hardware\mouse' and go to the 'pointer options' tab.

Under the 'motion' heading, the 'select a pointer speed' bar will increase the overall speed and responsiveness of the mouse.

9) Increase PS/2 Mouse Performance

First go to 'start\control panel\printers and other hardware\mouse.' Select the 'hardware' tab, highlight your mouse or pointing device, and click 'properties.' Choose the 'advanced settings' tab.

Change the 'sample rate' dropdown box to the maximum value of 200.

10) Relocate the 'My Documents' Folder

To change the location of My Documents folder right click the 'my documents' icon on the desktop or the start menu, and select 'properties.'

In the 'target' tab, enter the path to the folder location you wish to use, or press the 'find target' button to browse to the folder. You will be asked if you wish to move all existing data to the new location.

Rapidshare since changed their Captcha Images so the program above became unuseable. Though, some very nice members of a german community made it possible again:

- Enter any Link from rapidshare.com oder .de and many other hosters

Computer Error Beep codes

Note:The contents below are not my discovery but taking out from different sources.

When your is computer making some funny sound via the system speaker, it's not doing it because it wants to be heard. The computer is trying to tell you what's wrong.

Beep Code:	Description of Problem:
No Beeps	Short, No power, Bad CPU/MB, Loose Peripherals
One Beep	Everything is normal and Computer POSTed fine
Two Beeps	POST/CMOS Error
One Long Beep, One Short Beep	Motherboard Problem
One Long Beep, Two Short Beeps	Video Problem
One Long Beep, Three Short Beeps	Video Problem
Three Long Beeps	Keyboard Error
Repeated Long Beeps	Memory Error
Continuous Hi-Lo Beeps	CPU Overheating

So as you can see, if your computer doesn't start up and starts beeping away like a mime you can start the process of figuring out what is wrong by stopping for a second and listening. From a single beep which tells you everything is okay, to three long beeps which indicate a keyboard error to the sirCen like Hi-Lo beeps that tell you the PU is overheating - listening to your computer is good!

Movie as your Desktop

This is a popular VLC trick which enables you to run a Movie as your Desktop.

Note:This one is not my discovery but got it from other sources.

For this trick you will have to download VLC Media Player.

Now you just need to follow the steps below:-

1) Go to Settings >> preferences (click on the Pictures to enlarge them)

2)In Preference >> Interface >> Main Interface

3)In Main Interface >> Click on wxWidgets >>Remove the tick on 'Taskbar' and put a tick on 'System tray icon'.

4) Go to Video >> Output Modules

5) In Output Modules >> DirectX . Now look at the right-bottom corner to find Advanced Option.Check this option to get some more options and then 'Enable wallpaper Mode'.

6) Last Click on Playlist and check 'Repeat Current Item'.

7) Save and Restart VLC.

8)Run a Movie you want as wallpaper(right-click Movie and select wallpaper).Quit VLC to get your Original wallpaper.

What are Keyloggers?

Keystroke logging (often called keylogging) is a method of capturing and recording user keystrokes. Keylogging can be useful to determine sources of errors in computer system, to study how users interact with systems, and is sometimes used to measure employee productivity on certain clerical tasks.The software used to log the keystrokes are called keyloggers.Sadly,now keyloggers are misused to hack passwords of other computers and E-mail.Some keyloggers come with the feature where you can embed the keylogger into other software and send it to the victim via any means (usually through internet) and when the victim tries to install the software the keylogger gets installed in the background without the knowledge of the victim.Then this keylogger will record all the keystrokes and send the logs back to the owner.

How to know that a keylogger is present in your pc?

Keyloggers are usually found in softwares such as Multiplayer gaming Cheats,Bots etc. (but can also be hidden in other softwares too)which are easily available for downloads.You must refrain from downloading such softwares.Many antivirus can detect the keyloggers(but not all of them can).You just need to Update your antivirus definitions.There are even Keylogger removal tools that can remove these things.If you doubt that your PC might be infected with keyloggers just follow the steps below to get rid of them.

1) Keylogger usually get installed in your "%windir%" or "%windir%/system32" folders.Name of the installation Folder can be '5-digit number' or '3-char'.Just find such a Folder and see its contents.If you have not installed it just delete it(uninstallation wont help as it asks for a password).

2) If you are unbale to locate the actual Folder you can just unhide all the hidden files and folders and search for "keylogger(s)" ,if you find any just delete them.

3) Update your antivirus and run complete system scan(avast,kaspersky,bitdefender can easily detect them).Remember many antivirus cant detect these.

5) Keyloggers usually keep running in stealth mode in the background.You can unhide them using different key combinations (eg:Alt+Ctrl+Shift+'any key').It can be a single key or combinations of keys.Try these combinations

These are some ways to get keyloggers out of your system.

How to confirm your doubt of presence of keyloggers?

1) Any Keylogger or Trojan will make use of the internet connection to connect itself to its owner

So you can simply Start your internet,close all browser and downloads and check Network performance in the Task bar.If you find any abnormal fluctuation then the presence is confirmed
(not always true).

2) If the password of your E-mail account is frequently getting hacked then you might be infected .
